So, I think I’ve finally finished the main areas of the Openland soundtrack. I just need to consider the separate album that will be released along with the film now. It took quite a long time but the music is now in the talented hands of Patrick ‘Defasten’, the film maker/video artist who is behind the visual side of the project. Really, Patrick is the main man behind this. I just made a load of squiggly and splishy sounds for him to put on top.
Here’s the trailer to give you a taster : Openland trailer
It’s been a great project to work on and has made me realise that I would love to do more soundtracks. Not those horrid orchestral things you hear on the majority of Hollywood films, that would be utterly pointless. No, I just love looking at colours, shapes, objects, skies, people, narrative, abstractions and objects, and then creating sonics that work with whatever I’m looking at. Something that, hopefully, compliments and enhances what you see. It’s addictive.
I started out on the project by watching some early clips provided by Patrick and then playing improvised acoustic guitar along with them and layering various takes. Finding intervals, textures and melodies was exciting and the results formed a base for later processing and composition.
The final tracks were formed from the early improvisations along with pieces created from a digital base, a contrast to the acoustic compositions. I looked for a wide variety of textures, tempos and densities. This is where it got addictive- working on a track and then listening to it whilst watching some footage, the visuals and sonics intertwining and becoming something more than the separate elements.
The completed music has now been sent to Patrick and I await the final results with much excitement. There’s a really cinematic, epic quality to his work.

Hi Tom,
The trailer you’re linking to was posted on youtube by Mr Defasten so I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing.
Quicktime is a bit of a pain isn’t it? If you’re on a PC then it’s worth checking out ‘Quicktime Alternative’ as an easy way to view movies in that format.

Huh - I wasn’t aware of quicktime alternative but I’ll check it out, thanks.
The film looks cool - I hope you keep the blog updated with when we’ll be able to watch it in the UK!

The film should be out on DVD (with an audio album in the same box) sometime next year.
