I’m not a huge fan of lists but they’re the only way to recommend some cultural stuff so I’ll try one out anyway. It’s all going to be a bit random.
Fings wot I is liking at the moment:
MUSIC Timeblind – Ghostification — This ep is just so good. It came out a year or so ago but my friend Chris brought it to my attention fairly recently. I guess you could call it dubstep but it sits in the genre with a very clear and individual sound. You can tell It’s been created by someone who has plenty of experience in music production and gives off a warmth I’ve not heard in electronic music for some time.
BOOK Haruki Murakami – A wild sheep chase — Why does Murakami draw me in everytime I read one of his novels? He hits the spot whenever I delve into one of his books. They’re always incredibly inventive and yet precise in style. He might go off at a tangent, describing a meal with intricate detail or writing about how you should always buy quality sofas, yet he never waffles. I wish I could write like that.
MUSIC Eddie Gale – Black Rhythm Happening — A crazy piece of music. The album it’s from slightly disappointed me but only due to the fact that nothing could touch the title track. It’s got a fantastic, off kilter groove, a really strange brass motif and one of the best vocal chants I’ve ever heard. It’s a ‘What the fuck is this’ kind of track that isn’t sitting in one genre or another. My favourite form of music.
ART Gregor Schneider – Nacht-Video Haus ur, Rheydt — Schneider has created an artwork within a house. False rooms, rooms within rooms, holes, disorienting spaces and strange artifacts. This video sees him exploring the house with a camera. It’s really claustrophobic and very weird. There’s a scary quality to the film, the camera panning across strange objects in the half-light, the artist moving walls and squeezing through small gaps. It feels like a dream (or a nightmare).
That was fun. I’ll do it again soon as I’m sure my sieve brain will recall more fun things that escape it at the moment.
